Chennai hosts its third annual Rainbow Pride in June 2011, a month celebrating visibility of alternate sexualities and gender identities. June Pride events are observed around the world, and commemorate the Stonewall Inn riots of 1969, a watershed event that sparked the global movement for civil rights by and for lesbian, gay, bi and transgender (LGBT) people.
Several formal and informal collectives have joined hands to organize a month-long series of events in Chennai this June. These include a panel discussion on LGBT issues; a performance festival; a sensitization session for counsellors and psychologists; a meeting of parents of LGBT children, poster and placard-making sessions; and film screenings; culminating in the Chennai Rainbow Pride march to be held on June 26th, 2011. We invoke the words of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar to ask அன்பிற்கும் உண்டோ அடைக்குந்தாழ்? (Can love be shackled?). Our loves and identities fall outside of the norm of exclusive male-female desires, gender identities and expectations, and are reviled as unnatural and foreign. However these loves and identities are natural to us and have existed since ancient times in our own cultures. That we are not contained within the common definitions of permissible sexuality and gender expressions does not make us undeserving of equal human rights.
This Pride,
- We call upon the Supreme Court to uphold the historic Naz Foundation verdict of July 2, 2009, that read down IPC Section 377 to exclude consensual relationships among adults of the same sex. We urgently need the Supreme Court to secure the fundamental rights of India’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens to lives of dignity, equality, and free expression.
- We ask that our families value our desires as natural and normal, allow us the freedom to choose our expression in terms of attire, romantic and life partners, and not to force us into heterosexual marriages against our wishes.
- We call for an immediate end to the epidemic of violence and discrimination perpetrated by individuals as well as institutions such as the police , judiciary, and family against LGBT persons, sex workers and others marginalized on grounds of sexuality.
- We call for greater sensitization among counselors, particularly in government helplines and existing crisis helplines, towards the issues faced by LGBT persons, and issues of gender and sexuality more broadly.
- We seek affordable and appropriate healthcare for all, and condemn unscientific and unethical attempts by some in the medical and mental health professions to change sexual orientation through drugs, electro-shock therapy, and other means.
- We call upon employers in the business sector to formulate comprehensive policies to end homophobia and sexuality-based discrimination in their workplaces, and to commit to providing LGBT persons with equal opportunities and appropriate channels through which to seek redressal.
- We appeal to the media to be fair, inclusive and responsible in telling our stories. We ask that the media and film industry not perpetuate stereotypes, myths and misinformation about our lives; and not invisibilize or trivialize us and our issues.

“அன்பிற்கும் உண்டோ அடைக்குந் தாழ்?” – திருவள்ளுவர்
இந்த ஜூன் மாதம், சென்னை மூன்றாவது முறையாக, தனது வருடாந்திர வானவில் விழாவை நடத்தவிருக்கிறது. மாறுபட்ட பாலீர்ப்பு மற்றும் பால் அடையாளம் கொண்டவர்களை ஆதரிக்கவும், அவர்கள் பற்றி சமூகத்தில் விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்தவும் மற்றும் அவர்களின் வெளிப்பாட்டையும் அவற்றின் பன்மையையும் கொண்டாடுவதே ஒரு மாத காலம் நடைபெறவிருக்கும் இவ்விழாவின் நோக்கம்.
1969 ஆம் ஆண்டு நியுயார்க் நகரில் Stonewall Inn என்ற இடத்தில் ஜூன் மாதம் நிகழ்ந்த போராட்டம் நாளடைவில் உலகெங்கிலும் மாறுபட்ட பாலீர்ப்பு மற்றும் பால் அடையாளங்கள் கொண்ட மக்களின் மனித உரிமை இயக்கங்களாக உருவெடுத்தது. நங்கை (தன்பாலீர்ப்பு கொண்ட பெண்கள்/Lesbian ) ,நம்பி (தன்பாலீர்ப்பு கொண்ட ஆண்கள்/Gay ),ஈரர் (இருபாலீர்ப்பு கொண்டவர்கள்/Bisexual), திருனர் (திருநங்கைகள், திருநம்பிகள்/Transgender) என்று வானவில்லின் வண்ணங்கள் போன்ற பல அடையாளங்கள் இவற்றுள் அடங்கும்.
பல ஒருங்கிணைந்த நிறுவனங்களும், குழுமங்களும், உள்ளூர் கூட்டமைப்புக்களும் ஒன்றாக இணைந்து, இந்த ஜூன் மாதம், மாறுபட்ட பாலீர்ப்பு மற்றும் பால் அடையாளம் கொண்டவர்களுக்கான கலை விழா, இவர்களின் பிரச்சனைகளை பற்றிய கலந்துரையாடல் நிகழ்ச்சி, மனநல மருத்துவர்கள் மற்றும் ஆலோசகர்களுக்கு பாலியல் சிறுபான்மையினரை பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்தும் சந்திப்பு நிகழ்ச்சி , திரைப்பட திரையீடல்கள், மாறுபட்ட பாலீர்ப்பு மற்றும் பால் அடையாளம் கொண்டவர்களின் பெற்றோர்களின் சந்திப்பு நிகழ்ச்சி, போன்ற பல குதூகலமுட்டும், பயனுள்ள நிகழ்சிகளை திட்டமிட்டுள்ளன. இதற்கெல்லாம் முத்தாயிர்பு வைத்தாற்போல அமையப்போவது – சென்னை நகரத்தின் வரலாற்றில் மூன்றாவது முறையாக மெரீனா கடற்கரையில் ஜூன் 26 ஆம் தேதி நடக்கவிருக்கும் வானவில் பேரணி. இந்த நிகழ்சிகள் பற்றிய விவரங்களை எங்கள் “நிகழ்ச்சிகள்” பககத்தில் காணலாம்.
“அன்பிற்கும் உண்டோ அடைக்குந்தாழ்?” என்ற வள்ளுவரின் வாக்கியத்தை நாங்கள் இங்கு நினைவுகூர்கிறோம். ஆண்-பெண் உறவுகள் என்கிற ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட விழைவுகளுக்கும், பாலின அடையாளங்களுக்கும், எதிர்பார்ப்புகளுக்கும் வெளியே நிற்பவை எங்களுடைய காதல், அன்பு மற்றும் அடையாளங்கள். இவைகள் சமூகத்தால், ‘இயற்கைக்குப் புறம்பானவை’ என்றும் ‘வெளிநாட்டு இறக்குமதிகள்’ என்றும் தூற்றப்படுகின்றன. ஆனால் இந்தக் காதல்களும், அடையாளங்களும் எங்களுக்கு இயற்கையானவை. நம்முடைய பண்பாட்டிலும் தொன்றுதொட்டு இருந்து வருபவை. பொதுவாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்படும் பாலியல் மற்றும் பாலின வரையறைகளுக்குள் அடங்காதவர்கள் என்ற காரணத்தால், எங்களது மனித உரிமைகள் மறுக்கப்படுவது அநீதி.
இந்த வானவில் விழாவில் -
- ஜூலை 2, 2009 அன்று தில்லி உயர் நீதிமன்றம் நாஸ் பவுண்டேஷன் ஐ.பி.சி 377 ஐ எதிர்த்து தொடுத்திருந்த வழக்கில் “வயதுவந்த இருவரின் விருப்பதுடன் நடக்கும் பால் சமந்தப்பட்ட உறவு குற்றமல்ல” என்று தீர்ப்பு வழங்கியது. இந்த தீர்ப்பை இந்திய உச்ச நீதிமன்றம், நிலைநிறுத்த வேண்டும் என்று வேண்டுகோள் விடுக்கிறோம். இந்த தீர்ப்பை நிலைநிறுத்தி, மாறுபட்ட பாலீர்ப்பு மற்றும் பால் அடையாளம் கொண்டவர்களின், அடிப்படை மனித உரிமைகளை பாதுகாத்து, அவர்களும் எல்லோரையும் போல, சுதந்திரமாக, கௌரவத்துடன், சம உரிமைகளோடு வாழ உடனடியாக வழி செய்யுமாறு, இந்திய உச்ச நீதி மன்றத்தை வேண்டுகிறோம்.
-எங்களுடைய விழைவுகளை இயற்கையானவை என்று ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும்படியும், எங்களது உடைகள் ,காதல், வாழ்க்கைத் துணை ஆகியவற்றைத் தேர்வு செய்யும் சுதந்திரத்தை எங்களுக்கு அனுமதிக்குமாறு எங்களது குடும்பங்களைக் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம். எங்கள் விருப்பத்திற்கு மாறாக ஆண்-பெண் திருமண உறவிற்குள் எங்களை வற்புறுத்தித் திணிக்க வேண்டாம் என்றும் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம்.
- மாறுபட்ட பாலீர்ப்பு மற்றும் பால் அடையாளம் கொண்டவர்கள் மற்றும் பாலியல் தொழிலாளர்கள் மீது தொடர்ந்து நிகழ்ந்து வரும் வன்முறைகளுக்கும், உரிமை மீறல்களுக்கும் உடனடியாக நிறுத்த படவேண்டும். தனி மனிதர்களும், எங்கள் குடும்பங்களும், காவல் துறையினரும், நீதித் துறையும், பொதுமக்களும் எங்கள் மீது தொடுக்கும் வன்முறை, ஒதுக்குதல் ஆகியவற்றிற்கு உடனடித் தீர்வு வேண்டும்.
- மனநல ஆலோசகர்கள் மத்தியில், குறிப்பாக அரசாங்கம் மற்றும் பிற உதவி எண்களை கையாளும் மனநல ஆலோசகர்கள் மத்தியில், மாறுபட்ட பாலீர்ப்பு மற்றும் பால் அடையாளம் கொண்டவர்களை பற்றியும், அவர்களின் பிரச்சனைகள் மற்றும் தேவைகளை பற்றியும் தகுந்த புரிதலும், விழிப்புணர்வும் உருவாக வேண்டும் என்று நாங்கள் வேண்டுகிறோம். இது மட்டுமல்லாமல் பொதுவாக பால், பாலீர்ப்பு சமந்தப்பட்ட பிரச்சனைகளை பற்றிய விரிவான புரிதலும், விழிப்புணர்வும் உருவாக வேண்டும் என்றும் நாங்கள் வேண்டுகிறோம்.
- எல்லோருக்கும் தேவையான முறையான மருத்துவ வசதிகள் கிடைக்கப்பெற வேண்டும். ஒருவருடைய பாலீர்ப்பை மாற்றுவது என்ற பேரில் மருந்துகள் மூலமும், மின் அதிர்ச்சி சிக்கிசைகள் மூலமும் செய்யப்படும் கொடூர முயற்சிகள் நிறுத்தப்பட வேண்டும். அறிவியபூர்வமற்ற, ஆதாரபூர்வமற்ற இந்த முயற்சிகள் மருத்துவப் பணியின் நன்னெறிகளை அவமதிக்கும் செயல்பாடுகள் என்பது தவிர மனித உரிமை மீறல்களும் கூட.
- தனியார் துறை நிறுவனகள், தங்களது அமைப்பில் கொள்கைகளை உருவாக்கி, மாறுபட்ட பாலீர்ப்பு மற்றும் பால் அடையாளம் கொண்டவர்கள் மீது வேற்றுமைப்படுத்துதலோ அல்லது ஒதுக்குதலோ நடக்காமல் தடுக்க வேண்டும் என்றும், அப்படி நடந்தால் அதை தகுந்த முறையில் கையாளுவதற்கும், தீர்வு காணுவதற்கும் போதிய வழிமுறைகளை ஏற்ப்படுத்தி தர வேண்டும் என்றும் வேண்டுகிறோம்.
- எங்களது வாழ்க்கைகளையும் எங்களைப் பற்றிய செய்திகளை வெளியிடும்பொழுதும் நியாயமாகவும், பொறுப்புணர்ச்சியுடனும் செயல்படும்படி ஊடகங்களைக் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம். எங்களைப் பற்றிய கற்பிதங்களையும் தவறான தகவல்களையும் தொடர்ந்து வெளியிடுவதையும் தவிர்க்க வேண்டுமென்றும், எங்களையும் எங்களது பிரச்சனைகளையும் கொச்சைப்படுத்தும் விதங்களில் சித்தரிப்பதைத் தவிர்க்க வேண்டுமென்றும், ஊடகங்களையும், திரைப்பட துறையினரையும் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம்.
