Chennai celebrates Rainbow Pride 2010 with an evening of poetry including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) themes, featuring work by celebrated and lesser known poets. The readings, in English and Tamil, will make visible loves, intimacies and relationships that go beyond what is mainstream, conventional and heteronormative.

Acclaimed Chennai poets and writers Salma and Sharanya Manivannan will read selections from their work. The evening will also feature readings of Auden, Garcia Lorca, Vikram Seth, translations from Urdu Rekthi poetry, and others. We invite you to share your poems or read from your favorite queer poets.

Tamil actor-activist Rohini will inaugurate Nirangal.

The Shakti Resource Center and Orinam/MP present Nirangal, a two-day performance festival in Chennai

Taejha

on 19 and 20 June 2010. The festival will bring LGBT practitioners of traditional folk, classical and modern arts and performance together in an attempt to dispel notions that people of alternate sexuality and gender are alien to Indian tradition and culture. Also scheduled for Saturday, June 19th, is an art contest, to be held 3.30 pm at the Spaces venue. Charcoal, paint, and other supplies will be available for you to express yourself through painting, sketches, grafitti or kolam. The results will be on display through the weekend.

Chennai celebrates the historic July 2, 2009, verdict of Delhi High Court in the Naz Foundation case with a release of the Tamil edition of The Right that Dares to Speak its Name, a primer on the Naz Foundation decision put together by Arvind Narrain and Marcus Eldridge. The Primer contains a schematic guide highlighting the key aspects of the judgment with a commentary. It then examines the background and finally contains a few commentaries that came out after the judgment. The English version of the book is available for download from the ALF website.

Chennai hosts its second annual Rainbow Pride in June 2010, a month celebrating visibility of alternate sexualities and gender identities.

Several formal and informal collectives have joined hands to organize a month-long series of events in Chennai this June. These include a debate on homosexuality and family values; an LGBT performance festival; a poetry reading event; a meeting of parents of LGBT people; art, slogan, placard and beauty contests; and film screenings; culminating in the Chennai Rainbow Pride march to be held on June 27th, 2010. - We celebrate the love that was decriminalized by Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar of Delhi High Court in the historic Naz Foundation verdict of July 2, 2009.

- We call upon the Supreme Court to uphold the judgment in its entirety, and secure the fundamental rights of India’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens to lives of dignity, equality, and free expression.

- We lament the loss of Prof. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras and countless other citizens, and call for an immediate end to violence, harassment and persecution of LGBT people by educational institutions, employers, law enforcement, religious institutions, and the public. Too many lives have been lost to irrational fear and hate.

- We request that hijras and other transgenders be recorded in the 2011 national census, in the category corresponding to their gender of choice, and not be limited by the currently available binary choices of ‘male’ and ‘female’.

- We seek affordable and appropriate healthcare for all, and condemn unscientific and unethical attempts by some in the medical and mental health professions to change sexual orientation through drugs, electro-shock therapy, and other means.

- We ask that our families value our desires as natural and normal, allow us the freedom to choose our expression in terms of attire, romantic and life partners, and not to force us into heterosexual marriages against our wishes.

- We appeal to the media to be fair, inclusive and responsible in telling our stories; not perpetuate stereotypes, myths and misinformation about our lives; and not invisibilize or trivialize us and our issues.

- மனித சம உரிமை பேணும் இந்தத் தீர்ப்பினை உச்சநீதிமன்றம் முழுவதுமாக நிலைநிறுத்த வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம். மாறுபட்ட பாலீர்ப்பு மற்றும் பால் அடையாளம் கொண்டவர்கள் அனைவரும் சம உரிமைகளுடனும், மதிப்புடனும் வாழ்வதற்கு இது வழி செய்யும்.

- மாறுபட்ட பாலீர்ப்பு மற்றும் பால் அடையாளம் கொண்டவர்கள் மீது தொடர்ந்து நிகழ்ந்து வரும் வன்முறைகள் காரணமாக பேராசிரியர் ஸ்ரீனிவாஸ் ராமச்சந்திர சிராஸ் மற்றும் அவரைப் போன்ற எண்ணற்றோரை நாம் இழந்திருக்கிறோம். கல்வி நிறுவனங்களும், கார்பரேட் நிறுவனங்களும், காவல் துறையினரும், நீதித் துறையும், மத அமைப்புகளும், பொதுமக்களும் எங்கள் மீது தொடுக்கும் வன்முறை, ஒதுக்குதல் ஆகியவற்றிற்கு உடனடித் தீர்வு வேண்டும்.

- 2011 ஆம் ஆண்டு தேசிய அளவில் மேற்கொள்ளப்படவிருக்கும் மக்கள் கணக்கெடுப்பில் திருநங்கைகளும் ஆண் பாலடையாலம் ஏற்கும் பெண்களும்(திருநம்பிகள்), அவர்கள் தேர்வு செய்யும் பால்/ பாலின பிரிவினையைத் தேர்வு செய்ய அனுமதிக்க வேண்டும். இப்பொழுதுள்ள “ஆண்/ பெண்” என்ற குறுகிய வரையறைக்குள் திணிப்பதைத் தவிர்க்க வேண்டும்.

- எல்லோருக்கும் தேவையான முறையான மருத்துவ வசதிகள் கிடைக்கப்பெற வேண்டும். ஒருவருடைய பாலீர்ப்பை மாற்றுவது என்ற பேரில் மருந்துகள் மூலமும், மின் அதிர்ச்சி சிக்கிசைகள் மூலமும் செய்யப்படும் கொடூர முயற்சிகள் நிறுத்தப்பட வேண்டும். அறிவியபூர்வமற்ற,ஆதாரபூர்வமற்ற இந்த முயற்சிகள் மருத்துவப் பணியின் நன்னெறிகளை அவமதிக்கும் செயல்பாடுகள் என்பது தவிர மனித உரிமை மீறல்களும் கூட.

-எங்களுடைய விழைவுகளை இயற்கையானவை என்று ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும்படியும், எங்களது உடைகள் ,காதல், வாழ்க்கைத் துணை ஆகியவற்றைத் தேர்வு செய்யும் சுதந்திரத்தை எங்களுக்கு அனுமதிக்குமாறு எங்களது குடும்பங்களைக் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம். எங்கள் விருப்பத்திற்கு மாறாக ஆண்-பெண் திருமண உறவிற்குள் எங்களை வற்புறுத்தித் திணிக்க வேண்டாம் என்றும் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம்.

- எங்களது வாழ்க்கைகளையும் எங்களைப் பற்றிய செய்திகளை வெளியிடும்பொழுதும் நியாயமாகவும், பொறுப்புணர்ச்சியுடனும் செயல்படும்படி ஊடகங்களைக் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம். எங்களைப் பற்றிய கற்பிதங்களையும் தவறான தகவல்களையும் தொடர்ந்து வெளியிடுவதையும் தவிர்க்கவும். எங்களையும் எங்களது பிரச்சனைகளையும் கொச்சைப்படுத்தும் விதங்களில் சித்தரிப்பதைத் தவிர்க்கவும்.
