Beginning 2014, the Chennai Rainbow Coalition, which had functioned from 2009 to 2013, expanded to Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition, partly in response to the need for consolidated effort to oppose IPC Section 377, which was read down by the Supreme Court of India in Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India.
As of 2018, the Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition consists of collectives, CBOs and NGOs (partial list: Kattiyakari, Nirangal, Orinam, Sahodaran, SIAAP, SAATHII, Tamil Nadu LGBTIQ Movement, Thozhi, etc.) and individuals working to raise visibility around sexuality and gender identity issues. It also includes groups constituted by the erstwhile Tamil Nadu AIDS Initiative and Pehchan initiative of SIAAP across Tamil Nadu.
