Orinam.net is a bilingual website (Tamil and English) associated with the Chennai-based social-support-arts-advocacy group Orinam. The site contains information on alternate sexualities and gender identities and resources for the public, media, healthcare, educational institutions, workplaces, and family members of LGBT people. I lived in Chennai, India, for 23 years. I’ve never been in the closet. Well, not really. I’ve always been butch — short hair, boys’ clothes, a gentleman’s manner, and of course, a way with the ladies. But in India, not being in the closet doesn’t necessarily mean being out of it.

Transgender Day of Remembrance or TDoR as its commonly called, is coming up on Nov 20. It is a day dedicated to honoring Transgender folks who have died outside of natural circumstances.
In this hangout, some of Orinam’s members who are gay, talk about how they dealt with their family members post coming out.
We urge community members, service providers (health, education, livelihood, legal) and policy professionals to understand the issues specific to trans men as well as cross-cutting issues, in order to ensure truly inclusive services and policies. We urge that diverse community representation be ensured in consultations for policy development.

We need inclusion!!
The students of India need to be aware of LGBTQ. Including these subjects in education is a great start.
It’s high time students were taught about the diversity of relationships, in an age-appropriate way…so including LGBT content in the National Education Policy, not only as a way to prevent bullying etc, but also because it’s the right thing to do – kids need to be given all the knowledge they need through education to make their way in the world. Not just some.
