Join us in the fight for LGBT equality!

campaign for open minds logo

We, family and friends of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) people in India or of Indian origin, stand in solidarity with our loved ones and their struggles for equality and dignity. Our love and respect for them is unconditional, and has helped them cope with discrimination meted out to them by society. We strongly urge society to embrace them whole-heartedly as we have done, and to join us in eradicating the scourges of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia (irrational fear of or prejudice towards LGBT people).

As witnessed in the adage "யாதும் ஊரே, யாவரும் கேளிர்," (the whole world is my kith and kin), India has a cultural tradition of accepting and even promoting diversity. We believe that shunning our own sons, daughters, siblings and friends for their sexual orientation or gender identity is antithetical to our enlightened culture. We strongly deplore misguided and violent attempts to undermine the dignity of LGBT people, attempts by unscrupulous health professionals to change their sexual orientation through any means, including reparative therapy, and moves by some sections of the media and film industries to sensationalize and stigmatize these issues.

We believe that such rejection of our loved ones often happens because of lack of knowledge and resources to learn about the diverse facets of human sexuality. This diversity has existed, been accepted and even celebrated in India until recent history. As we all can attest, having an LGBT friend, child, brother or sister, has helped us put a human face to the issue, broken barriers of ignorance, and revealed to us the essential humanity that bridges individual differences.

Even though the World Health Organization does not consider homosexuality to be a disease, and even though sexual orientation and gender identity are considered to be among the basic human rights, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia are still rampant around the globe, including India. The recent Delhi High Court ruling decriminalizing consensual sexual behavior among adults is a welcome move, and we hope society will follow suit in recognizing the dignity and constitutional morality underlying all sexual orientations and gender identities. Several leading social activists and luminaries from various walks of life and politicians, from Nobel laureate Amartya Sen to writer Vikram Seth, have spoken out against homophobia. We add our voice to theirs.

In signing this open letter, we declare that we, friends and family of LGBT people:

- will support LGBT people with love, affection and understanding and accept them for who they are
- will equip ourselves with knowledge and resources to effectively support LGBT people
- will not pressure our LGBT friends/family members to get married against their wishes
- will not try to 'convert' our LGBT friends/family members towards heterosexuality or gender normative behaviors
- will oppose unethical medical practices such as reparative therapy
- will oppose media sensationalism and discriminatory reporting of LGBT issues
- will advocate for social and legal equality for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender and gender-identity
