Thanks to all who attended the performances of talented SriLankan-Tamil-American performer YaliniDream and guest artists Sharanya Manivannan and Shailja Patel on Jan 29, 2011, at Spaces, Besant Nagar. The event was co-hosted by The Shakti Resource Center and MP/Orinam. We are grateful to Sadanand Menon for allowing us (once again!) use of the beautiful venue, and to New Indian Express for carrying a piece by Aniruddhan Vasudevan on YaliniDream the same day.

(2) Exquisite opening act by Chennai-based poet Sharanya Manivannan, including such pieces as 'Ghazal of the Cooum' and 'You Bring Out the Sri Lankan in Me'
(3) Next, Kenyan-Indian-American performer Shailja Patel rocked the house with her powerful act.


(4) Main artist of the evening, YaliniDream, had hosted a workshop earlier in the day on arts as a tool for community organizing. Below the photo are links to two video excerpts of her captivating evening performance.

This report is about the families that are assigned to us and those that often are the biggest road blocks to being able to live the way we want to. The families that are supposed to be spaces of nurture, care and support, turn against their own children (often at very young ages), treat them with utter disregard and violence, and force them to conform to socially accepted ideas of what is “normal” without any regard to the individual’s dignity or personhood.
