In a petition that has been admitted in the 377 case, a group of parents of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people from across the country have come together to describe the very real harm that criminalization has caused their children, and themselves.
Sec 377 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) criminalizes same-sex behavior. In a huge setback to LGBT rights, The Supreme court of India on Dec 11th declared it is constitutional and can only be changed by the Indian parliament.
Both India and Nigeria have seen fundamental retrenchment of LGBTI rights within a month of each other. Chitra Nagarajan reflects on the way forward.
